Author's Note

Every day we learn more about Koi and pond keeping. Every day there is new technology entering the market–new filtration, more beautiful fish, hardier varieties of water lily, biological "green" products–but the more life changes, the more it stays the same.

Your pond is unique. You will learn what works for your pond and what does not. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to ponds. The grass is not always greener on the other side of the street, either. Please don't compare your "new" pond to a friend's 10-year-old established pond. There IS no comparison.

This book will show you some of the road maps to help you, as you learn what it is that will "grow" your pond or water feature into something you can be inestimably proud to own. If you are starting out, it can help you decide which type pond you'd most like to own. I hope to give you tools to be a good shopper when choosing a pond installer. You will gain the basic information to maintain your pond correctly and to respect the microscopic life forms that create a healthy environment. You will have a glimpse into the different areas of the country as they affect pond depth, water temperatures, winter cold tolerance, summer heat, and a host of other variables. Well water, although being the most natural, will not necessarily be the purest. We look at some of the issues concerning water as it affects the pond biology.

This book, although it covers the gamut of challenges facing Koi and water garden hobbyists in the United States, will have similarities to pond situations in far lands as well. It is meant only as an introduction to the hobby. This book is not the "Pond Bible," it is just the beginning.

After you have read the book, you will be more teachable, ready to learn, and more discerning of the immeasurable frivolous, unfounded information, which remains in circulation.

Question everything. Get the facts. Keep your focus on YOUR pond. You already know more about it than many of the self-professed experts. And above all, enjoy it! ☺
